A Preliminary Case Report on Acute Fatty Liver of Pregnancy | Chapter 12 | Current Topics in Medicine and Medical Research Vol. 13

In Vietnam, acute fatty liver of pregnancy (AFLP) is a rare condition. Since AFLP diagnosis is often difficult to differentiate from viral hepatitis, paraplegia, or bile duct disease based on published literature, AFLP diagnosis is often delayed. In Vietnam, the prevalence of hepatitis B in pregnant women is estimated to be 10% [1], and preeclampsia is estimated to be 0.2 percent [2]. AFLP is most common in the last three months of pregnancy or shortly after birth. A pregnant woman with AFLP with a 35.5-week gestational age was safely delivered both mother and child at Hung Vuong Hospital in Vietnam. A thorough medical history and physical examination, as well as compatible laboratory and ultrasound imaging findings, are often enough to make the diagnosis, and liver biopsy is rarely necessary. For the best maternal and foetal outcomes, intensive adjuvant therapy and rapid birth control are needed.
